THE MAKING OF A RUG, TAPESTRY: A CENTURIES-OLD CRAFT
Every piece in our studio is fully handmade using traditional Central Asian techniques. We wash and card local wool, wet-felt it into dense sheets, and meticulously hand-cut and sew contrasting patterns to assemble each rug. The entire process takes anywhere from 3 to 7 weeks, ensuring a masterpiece that lasts generations.
Step 1: Sourcing & Purifying
Our process begins with premium, locally sourced sheep wool. The raw wool is carefully sorted, then washed repeatedly in warm water with mild, organic soap to remove all dirt and natural oils. This ensures the final piece is incredibly durable, clean, and completely odor-free.
Step 2: Carding & Wet-Felting
Once dried, the wool is carded (combed) to align the fibers, then laid out in thick, overlapping layers. Using only hot soapy water and physical friction—rubbing, rolling, and pressing—we force the fibers to permanently interlock. This ancient wet-felting technique creates a dense, zero-shedding felt sheet.
Step 3: Patterning & Hand-Cutting
To create the signature Shyrdak design (a UNESCO-protected art form), two contrasting sheets of felt are layered together. Following traditional motifs drawn directly onto the wool, our artisans cut through both layers simultaneously by hand. This positive/negative cutting technique creates the beautiful, mirrored patterns unique to our craft.
Step 4: Stitching & Assembly
Finally, the precision-cut pieces are stitched together entirely by hand. We use reinforced seams to join the panels, ensuring the rug or tapestry remains perfectly flat and structurally sound for decades of daily use.
